ABEA\u2019s ownership status has also changed a number of times during its storied history.<\/p>\n<p>The old factory of A\u0392\u0395\u0391 has its own history, leaving a vivid imprint on the social and financial life of Chania as a city, the island of Crete and the country in general. The study of industrial history and heritage has a particular significance for areas such as Crete, where industrial development emerged much later compared to other European countries.<\/p>\n<p>Taking advantage of the industrial revolution was very difficult in 18<sup>th<\/sup>-19<sup>th<\/sup> century Chania, as a result of socio-political conditions. Crete was under Ottoman occupation, coal as a fuel was simply not available, and entrepreneurship was nonexistent.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation of ABEA near the end of the 19th century (1889), was a milestone in the modernization of the economic life of the country, as it was the first such company in Greece and one of the largest in the Mediterranean. In 18<sup>th<\/sup> century Crete, olive oil was the main export product.
